Sharp announces Aquos Xx and Aquos Xx Mini

Another day, another Snapdragon 800-powered Android smartphone. Sharp announced their latest flagship offering for Japanese carrier Softbank, called the Aquos Xx, and it’s got specs to compete with any other phone on the market. You get the de facto standard flagship processor, a Snapdragon 800, 2 GB of RAM, a full 1080p, 5.5-inch screen, and a 16.3 megapixel rear camera. On top of that, it sports an incredible thin bezel. As of right now, it’ll only be available in Japan this December, but depending on how it sells, it’s possible we could see it in other markets.

Archos GamePad 2 unveiled online, quad-core processor built in with a sexier display

Archos’ GamePad 2 has been outed online on a retailer’s website, including press images and specs. The page and its information has since been removed…

The original GamePad’s successor will feature a sexier screen of 1,280 x 800, 7-inch IPS display, a quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, and options for a 8/16 GB model. Android 4.3 coming to HTC One Dev Edition this week, Canadian HTC One later this month

According to HTC Americas president Jason Mackenzie, owners of the HTC One Developer’s Edition across America will receive Android 4.3 this week. Canadian owners will receive Android 4.3 before the end of the month. Rogers confirmed that the update is due in late September, while TELUS says their update will arrive in early October. As to the U.S. carrier models, they are still working hard at getting approvals from each carrier. We know that can be a long and tedious process so don’t expect anything until at least October.

Samsung recently released a list of the official accessories they’ll be offering for the Galaxy Note 3 including the S View Cover and Mini Purse, which were already announced. The Best Android Smartphones: HTC One

We really have reached the point where the top of the Android smartphone market is blanketed by some highly impressive devices. It's tough to go wrong. There's something for everyone, be it form factor or features or gimmicks and gizmos. But for our money, there's currently no better phone available than the HTC One.

There's a lot to like here. The (mostly) all-aluminum body looks and feels more sophisticated than a plastic phone, and the gentle curve fits the hand nicely. While we've still got our quibbles with the Sense user interface, Sense 5 is the most stylish version yet, and most important is that it doesn't exhibit the lag that we've seen in the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The front-facing stereo speakers change the way you experience music and videos on a smartphone. Games and movies are much more immersive and are a downright pleasure to play and listen to. There are a few times when the speakers may be too loud, but there are many more times when you're amazed you're getting that sort of sound from a Best Android smartphone.

HTC's camera also brought forth a bit of a paradigm shift. It's not the best all-around camera -- it suffers from contrast issues, and if you need something with a higher total resolution for enlarging pictures, you'll need to look elsewhere. But the introduction of Zoes -- the 3-second video clips -- and the introduction of automatically composed Video Highlights are something that nobody else is doing, and they make up for a lackluster camera application.

The HTC One also has been released on three of the four major U.S. carriers, as well as seeing wide availability worldwide -- and we're expecting Verizon to get its own variant this year as well.

In the months we've been using the HTC One, it's continuously caught the eyes of those around us and continued to impress us with its performance -- and for that it ranks as our best smartphone for first part of 2013.

Lego Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles on Android

Yoda Chronices launched on May the 4th for iOS devices and on LEGO.com but Android users will have to wait a little longer to be able to play this new LEGO game. For some reason LEGO don’t like releasing their Apps or games on the most popular mobile phone operating system, which is awfully strange.
Anyhoo this summer the LEGO Star Wars universe arrives at light speed on Android devices with LEGO Star Wars The Yoda Chronicles. As we reported last week The Yoda Chronicles is cross between an action game and an RTS (Real Time Strategic), players must decide whether to follow the path of the Jedi or descend to the Dark Side of the Force.
The game currently on iOS, is split into episodes that will be released over the next few weeks. When it becomes available on Google Play this Summer, all levels will be unlocked along with a few extra ones.

Dark Avenger for Android

In dungeon-crawlers like Diablo, game designers have taken the normally sedate RPG concept and taken it to a new, action-filled plane of existence.

With Dark Avenger for iOS and Android, Boolean and Gamevil go even further by stripping away all of the usual storyline nonsense and throwing you straight into the melee without any exposition whatsoever.

Your objective is to cut through the seemingly endless flood of undead monsters which populate the many dull and foreboding Dark Avenger stages.

IAP explained
You use gold and gems to purchase items in Dark Avenger. Both are readily available so long as you're prepared to drop some real-world moolah.

3,300 gold will cost you 69p / 99c, but if you're feeling particularly flush - or perhaps stupid - then you can grab 434,000 for an eye-watering £65. Seven gems are 69p / 99c, while 910 are £65.
Along the way, you'll pick up gold and loot, the latter of which takes the form of either usable items - such as health-giving potions - or equipment you can utilise to make the fight that little bit easier.

Button masher

The experience points you gain during combat boost your level ranking and unlock special skills to employ in the thick of battle. These skills come with a recharge cost and consume magical power, but they can make a real difference when you're surrounded by aggressive skeletons and are low on stamina.

The sheer number of items to collect and the ability to upgrade your character result in a real sense of progression here, but Dark Avenger is undone by its repetitive action (your character has a single three-hit combo which you'll need to spam for the entire duration of the game).

Enemies with ranged attacks force you to think tactically about how to prioritise your own offence. In the end, though, Dark Avenger really does just boil down to hitting monsters repeatedly then moving onto the next room.

Due to the less-than-expansive nature of each level, the repetitiveness of the action is less obvious, for you have opportunities to purchase new gear in between each stage. The promise of upgrades can only hold your attention for so long, however.

Going for gold

Of course, with this being a free-to-play release, in-app purchases make an appearance. Some of the rarer items cost gold and gems - the latter is a premium currency that is only available in large quantities if you're willing to spend real cash. Also, when you fall in battle, you can revive yourself using gems - another incentive to open up your wallet.

The problem is that Dark Avenger's gameplay rarely becomes exciting enough to entice you to reach for your credit card. And while it offers a few hours of entertainment at no cost, it won't keep your attention for long enough to make a real impression.

Bonds of the Skies for Android APK Download

Describing Kemco as the most active publisher of smartphone JRPGs would be pretty much bang on the money.

Well, Kemco's at it again this week, releasing a new role-playing game on both the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Tales as old as time

On the Android side of things, Kemco has just launched Bonds of the Skies. In it, The Big K tells the story of Eil, who may or may not be the god of wind.

As usual, the whole package is reminiscent of RPGs of the 16-bit era, so, yes, loads of bobble-headed sprites and quaint towns where no one minds if you wander into his house and steal from him.

Interestingly, the turn-based battles take place from a first-person perspective, with your characters represented by their character cards rather than a collection of pointy-haired pixels.

Bonds of the Skies has been optimised for the Xperia Play, by the way. Just sayin'.

HTC One teardown is not for the faint of heart

The folks at iFixit have torn apart HTC’s latest flagship, and they have one piece of advice: don’t try this at home. Any self service to be performed on the phone is not for the faint of heart. The HTC One’s solid, gapless construction creates quite a few issues when it comes to getting inside the device to take a look around. The first warning sign: iFixit had to literally pry the device apart, and it sounds like it was no easy task.

The innards of the one are no easy task, either. HTC has plastered everything together in a way that doesn’t make it all that easy to get at individual components. Even the screen, which would likely be the most common repair attempted at home, has connections routed on the motherboard in a way that still requires the entire phone to be cracked open, likely resulting in permanent damage to the phone’s aluminum case.

It looks like in accomplishing the feat of design that is the HTC One, some sacrifices had to be made when it comes to serviceability. That could just end up being One big headache.
